Sovereignty squares is the historical term with which Spanish territories located in North Africa have been known since the 19th century, as opposed to the areas that constituted the Spanish protectorate of Morocco. At present, this nomenclature is still used for the identification of islands and rocky outcrops off the north coast of Morocco, but not to refer to Ceuta and Melilla.
Historically, the sovereign squares were five (survivors of the former fortresses in Africa), usually subdivided into so-called major squares and minor squares. The present day Ceuta and Melilla were the largest islands and the Chafarinas Islands, the Al Hoceima Islands and the Velez de la Gomera Rock were the so-called smaller islands.
Apart from the previous ones, the island of Perejil, an uninhabited islet located near the Tingitana peninsula, a few metres from the Moroccan coast, was the subject of a confrontation between Spain and Morocco in 2002, and has often been described as a sovereign square. The status is not clear, as it does not formally belong to any of the states and is currently de facto a terra nullius, due in part to the agreement between Morocco and Spain, which led to the resolution that there would be no military presence or any sovereignty symbol on the island.Similarly, the island of Alborán has also been erroneously described as a square of sovereignty, since it is administratively part of the municipal district of the Andalusian city of Almería.
