Contrasting monologue 1 From Top Girls 1982 This monologue is taken from the opening scene of Top Girls which features Marlene a prominent 80s businesswoman having a dinner party with real and fictitious women throughout history. Pope Joan, is a legendary woman who allegedly became pope from 855-857. This monologue is Joan explaining her loss of her close friend who she was in constant theological arguments with. She realises that her stubbornness in their arguments was a folly as after he died she realised that her theological beliefs dictated that he would not have an afterlife and therefore they would never be reunited again.
